Preparation for Grades 7 to 9
Developing strong reading and math foundation is crucial for students in grades 7 to 9.
To improve reading abilities, it is highly encouraged to write a reading log or book report after competing a book as this helps enhance writing skills.
In terms of math, it is advisable to follow a sequential course order: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, leading up to grade 10. It is recommended to establish a strong foundation in reading and math before undertaking exam preparations such as the SAT/ACT.
Preparation for Grades 10 to 11
During grades 10 and 11, the primary focus shifts to college preparation. The summer vacation period becomes particularly important during this time. Many universities in the United States offer pre-college courses, which can provide valuable insights and previews of subjects of interest. It is also an opportunity to take advanced courses in preparation for the following year. Furthermore, seeking internships or volunteer activities related to fields of interest during the summer break is a great way to maximize the vacation period.
Preparation for Grade 12
As the fall semester begins, rising seniors begin their college application process. On average, students apply to around 12 colleges, although the number can be as high as 16 to 20. Hence, it is important to finalize the list of colleges to apply to and prepare the necessary essays and documents during the summer break. Additionally, since the final opportunity to take the SAT before applying for Early Decision/Early Action is in October, most prospective seniors spend their summer preparing for the SAT and working on their essays. Creating accounts on the Common Application and individual college application portals is essential. It is crucial to review the essay topics and application requirements once again, and begin preparing the applications accordingly. Early decision/early action applications usually start as early as September and run until the end of October, so it is advantageous to submit applications as early as possible. While it is common to apply to US universities first, followed by those in Hong Kong, UK, and Canada, it is important to carefully check the application deadlines for each university and plan accordingly.
